About five thousand years ago, the first round of backgammon game was introduced in Mesopotamia where the first written language was first created. The Europeans and Arabs have since then adopted the game, created new versions of it and called it different names over the centuries. Approximately one thousand sixty years ago, Takhteh Nard was played and to some, the way it was played was very similar to backgammon. Serious gamers and players prefer to bring along their own dice when competing but for the sake of fairness, it is now considered fair game for both to use the same pair of dice.
