Probably the most prevalent mistake I see other players make is to undervalue the importance of position.

Position is important in two ways. The most commonly understood is the importance of using position as a major factor in your hand selection and decision as to play a given hand in a particular situation. Less widely understood is the importance of using an opponents position in making your estimate of the strength of his hand.

For example, suppose you have KJo on the button and are faced with a decision whether or not to cold-call an opening raise.

If the raise came from a tight player under-the-gun you’re about a 2-1 dog against his probable range, but if the raise came from the same player, but sitting in the seat immediately to your right, you’re a small favorite against his probable range.

If a tight player opens under the gun it’s very unlikely that he has a hand that KJ has much of a chance against. But, if that same player is late in the lineup, he’ll widen his opening range quite a bit – enough so that your KJ does pretty well against most of the hands he might have.

Those who watch things happen are called passive players, those who make things happen we call aggressive, and those who wonder what happened, we call clueless. Most tables will have a selection of all three of these kinds of players.

Even within these groups, there are different kinds of players. This is particularly true among aggressive players. Aggression is a characteristic of a good poker player, but not all aggressive players are good players. Some of them play pretty badly, and some of them tend to play well under certain game conditions and don’t seem to be able to adjust when the conditions change.

Pot odds are for losers

Pot odds only really matter when you’re calling a bet made by someone else who is ahead of you on the hand. So, if you’re computing pot odds you’re playing catch up and your only hope to win is to get lucky and make that hand you’re drawing to.

A strategy based on calling and hoping to get lucky is not a winning strategy.

Of course, sometimes you should be calling and pot odds do matter those times. But it’s not something to obsess over.

Being Suited

How much difference is there really between suited connectors and unsuited connectors.

Like every other serious poker question the right answer is “It depends.”

One of the things it depends on is the range of hands you're up against.

For example, the difference in win percentage between AKs and AKo is only about 2% if all the money goes in before the flop (so that all 5 board cards are run out).  

Two percent isn't much, but if you're up against a player who is playing his top 6% of starting hands (which would be 88 or better, ATs or better, KQs, or AKo) then that two percent difference in win percentage is the difference between your AKs being a favorite and your AKo not being favored.

Two percent doesn't seem like much at all, but depending on the circumstances it can make a lot of difference.

Btw, for smaller cards being suited counts for more than 2%, for 86 being suited counts for about a 4% difference.

Reading tells is seldom about matching up some particular behavior (like how you eat an Oreo) with hand strength.  

The key to reading tells is looking at your opponents behaviors as a performance.  It requires you to do two things.

1.Determine whether your opponent is aware that he has an audience (is he aware that you're watching?)
2.Determine whether your opponent is behaving naturally or is acting.

Actually you usually don't have to do both of those things, doing one of them is usually enough.  

If he's aware that you're watching him then your opponent will almost always intentionally behave in the opposite of what reality is.  If he's strong he'll act weak (by pretending he has a  tough decision to make) and if he's weak he'll act strong (acting quickly to pretend he's so strong he doesn't have to think about it).

Also, if he's clearly acting rather than acting naturally, he's almost always trying to deceive.

That's pretty much all there is to the general theory of reading tells.
